#1 Album of the Year 2005, Margaret Moser, The Austin Chronicle
Harp Magazine
Formerly one half of '80s country-alternative act Timbuk 3, Barbara Kooyman soars here where most successful artists typically fear to tread: the back catalog. You no doubt remember T3's big hit, "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades." Or perhaps you would just rather forget it. And that is understandable. T3's deranged street-person persona was not very fan friendly, and their tunes often bent just too far this side of abnormal. Well, surprise, surprise: Kooyman's acoustic versions of T3's relatively unknown catalog are thoroughly winning, surprisingly powerful and as easy to love as an old dog. She thankfully avoids their big hit, but with her rambling, low-country, near cornpone delivery and glowing guitar work, Kooyman comes off like some Appalachian mystic unearthing tales of rugged settlers, big shots and sinners on the mend. (The album is available exclusively through www.texamericana.org, in an effort to raise funds for public radio stations.)
